Number 1 Rule to Be Healthy: Veg Out

eric-bana-mens-health-2“Quench Your Appetite” reads the headline of this segment in the September 2009 issue of Men’s Health magazine.  While I have never had a strong appetite or craving for vegetables, the magazine (not surprisingly) has nothing but good things to say about them.  Their weight-loss trick? “Fill your belly to shrink it.”  The real trick, however, is to fill it with the right stuff.  Researchers at Penn State University, as MH points out, found that when people ate veggies in place of half the rice and protein on their plate, that they felt just as full.  “Vegetables are satiating because they contain water, which bulks food up.” This quote is taken from Jennifer Meengs, the co-author of the study. Peppers, cauliflower, zucchini, cucumbers and cabbage were the top pics.
